Bin Inspection Program - Red Note

My bin had a red note, what should I do?

Oh no! A red note means your bin was not serviced because it contained too many incorrect items or was not presented for collection correctly. To make sure your bin is serviced in the future, read the below tips to improve your waste and recycling habits.

If the note was on your:

Recycling bin (yellow lid)

If the note says your bin contained incorrect items

Remove any contamination (incorrect items) mentioned on your note and place in the correct bin.

These five materials you can recycle in your yellow lid bin:

  • Glass bottles and jars – beverage bottles, jam jars and sauce bottles, juice bottles and oil bottles.
  • Paper and cardboard – egg cartons, pizza boxes, glossy magazines, toilet rolls, cereal boxes, juice and milk cartons, wrapping paper and newspapers. Hint: if the bottom of the pizza box is too greasy, break up the box and recycle the clean sections.
  • Hard plastic containers – milk bottles, shampoo bottles, ice cream tubs, fruit punnets, detergent and soap bottles.
  • Steel containers – canned food tins and pet food tins.
  • Aluminium – drink cans, empty aerosols, pie trays and foil from the kitchen, which should be scrunched into a ball.

For more information on which items go in each bin download our A-Z Waste and Recycling guide.

For recycling opportunities beyond your yellow lid bin please refer to our waste and recycling handy guide.

If the note says your bin was not presented correctly

For future services ensure your bin is:

  • Placed at least 0.5 m away from other bins
  • At least 1 m away from other objects (trees, cars, letterboxes, etc.)
  • Weighs less than 75 kg (no building materials, etc.)
  • Is not overfilled and lid is closed

Please note Council will only service Bundaberg Regional Council provided bins. The bin should have a Bundaberg Regional Council logo or a logo from a former Burnett, Kolan, or Isis Shire.

If you've exceeded the bin allocation for your property, it means the property owner is not currently paying for the extra bins. To have the bins serviced, the owner must contact Council to request additional services be added to the property’s rates notice. Otherwise, Council will remove the bins from the property.

What next?

Share this information with your household and inspect your bin’s contents before the next service.

Follow the above tips to ensure your bin collection runs smoothly in the future.

If you would like your bin to be emptied before the next service, remove any incorrect items and consider:

Dispose of the note in your general waste bin.

If you often run out of space in your recycle bin, households can opt in for a second bin at a discounted rate.
