Parking

Where to stop and park in Bundaberg

The Bundaberg Region utilises a mix of regulated and non-regulated parking. Regulated parking is prominent in the Bundaberg CBD area and hospital precincts. An effective parking system is critical to traffic movements within the CBD where there are 1850 regulated parking bays and 1423 non-regulated parks or free parks. Regulated and timed parking ensures the regular turnover of parking spaces ensuring accessibility for local businesses and services.

Parking in Council’s regional communities (e.g. Childers and Gin Gin) is generally free except where specifically sign posted. Close to the Bundaberg CBD there are four dedicated parking bays suitable for large motorhomes or caravans located at the eastern end of the Riverside Parklands parking area off Quay Street adjacent to Walla Street.

Council has parking officers who patrol the regulated parking zones to ensure compliance with allowable times and identified uses of assigned parking areas, failure to comply may result in a parking infringement (fine) being issued.

To keep motorists and public transport passengers safe, road rules have been put in place to provide a safe transport environment for all users. To assist residents in finding a park in the Bundaberg CBD and identifying if any regulations apply to a particular parking space, an online map has been created which details the types of parking available and their location.

Parking tickets

Regulated and timed parking ensures accessibility for local businesses and services. Council has a small team of dedicated parking officers who regularly patrol and, if requried, issue infringement notices (parking tickets).

Should you receive an infringement notice you have several options in dealing with it which are detailed in the form and on the back of the notice.

ParkSmart

As our population grows so does traffic congestion and pressure on parking spaces, especially in the Bundaberg CBD, schools and around our hospitals.

To improve parking availability and traffic flow Council has introduced ParkSmart, an automated number plate recognition technology utilising vehicle mounted cameras to identify vehicles parking longer than the signed limit.

ParkSmart was introduced in September 2023 in the Bundaberg initially for the CBD, schools and hospital zones.

For more information on this initiative, please contact Council.

Disability parking

Council recognises that a portion of motorists have mobility issues and so provide a number of strategically located dedicated parking spaces to address their needs. Nationally recognised Disability Parking Permits are issued by the State Government, for further information including permit restrictions and provisions see below.

Parking zones

Shared zones

Shared zones are sign posted as "No Stopping/ No Standing areas and are regulated twenty four hours a day seven days a week. They are established to provide a safe area for pedestrians to cross the road and are not a suitable location to drop off or pick up passengers nor as a short-term parking spot.

Pedestrian crossings

Pedestrian crossings are provided to create a safe area for pedestrians to cross the road. Parking in and around them is dangerous because it greatly reduces the ability of drivers to see pedestrians crossing and either slow down or stop.

Double parking

Double parking is very dangerous and inconsiderate to other road users. This restriction is valid at all times.

No stopping/No standing areas

No Stopping/ No Standing areas are marked either by signage or by linemarking of a yellow unbroken line upon the road edge. These areas include areas that are close to intersections and across driveways where access is needed. This restriction is valid at all times, as indicated by signage or line markings.

Bus and Taxi zones

Parking of vehicles in Bus and Taxi zones is both dangerous and inconsiderate to the drivers and passengers of those types of vehicles. This restriction is valid at all times as indicated by signage.

Disability parking

Disabled parking bays are provided for the exclusive use of holders of valid permits only. The restriction on the use of these parking bays is valid twenty four hours a day seven days a week. The permits can only be used when the permit holder is travelling in the vehicle and the permit must be displayed to use these bays.

Time regulated parking

Time regulated parking is shown as a numerical time period such as 1 followed by the letter P and means a maximum of one hours parking after which the driver must leave the area and park elsewhere.

Further information on regulated parking definitions and restrictions can be located in the Transport Operations (Road Use Management—Road Rules) Regulation 2009, alternatively contact us on 1300 883 699.

These vehicles need to be readily identified as commercial vehicles by way of sign writing or another approved method.

Loading Zones are regulated between the hours of 8.45am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday and 8.45am to 11.30am Saturdays. Public holidays are excluded. Loading zones located in the CBD section of Bourbong Street Bundaberg are for commercial vehicles only for a maximum of 20 minutes for the purpose of loading and unloading goods and does not include activities such as personal banking or errands. All other loading zones do allow passenger vehicles to stop for a maximum of two (2) minutes for the purpose of picking up and dropping off passengers. Temporary parking permits

While all users of Council’s regulated parking are required to adhere to the signed parking restrictions, Council acknowledges that there may be occasions where longer stay parking may be required. Tradespersons requiring their work vehicles to be parked nearby to access or load or unload tools or materials is an example. In these situations, Council can issue a Temporary Parking Permit, which is subject to certain conditions of use, for the vehicle for a designated period of time.

To obtain a permit simply attend your nearest Council service centre and complete a Temporary Parking Permit application. A permit will then be issued which must be clearly displayed on the dashboard of the nominated vehicle.
