Sustainability at the zoo
Sustainability
Alexandra Park Zoo supports sustainability in the Bundaberg Region with its mission to connect community, country and wildlife.
We aim to use products that have been sustainably produced. This includes working with companies affiliated with sustainable practices such as the Forest Steward Council.
Companies that can show efforts in sustainability, equal opportunity, endeavours to reduce carbon emissions and support for the environment are sought after.
Alexandra Park Zoo and Bundaberg Regional Council have existing partnerships with local conservation groups and welcome opportunities to forge new partnerships in this area.
Alexandra Park Zoo routinely measures resources used including water, power and waste. This allows us to assess and consistently develop sustainable practices.
Water
Water management is a current focus area. The Zoo team use the following water reduction strategies - many of which can be used at home as well:
- Plant trees native to your area. These require less water than grass and exotic species, and also help to prevent erosion
- Irrigation timers
- Filtration systems
- Water quality testing
For ways you can save water at home or in your workplace head to the Nature Conservancy website.
Electricity
- Check the energy rating on appliances
- Turn off lights when not in use and ensure lights are energy efficient
- Service air conditioners and equipment regularly
- Switch to solar or green energy
Take a look at other ways you can reduce your energy usage on the WWF website.
Waste
- Recycle – always remember to check the label and Council’s website for recycling options
- Reuse – are you using products that can be used more than once?
- Donate items no longer needed to a local charity
- Reduce – Consider options that minimise packaging or use none at all
- Utilise compost and worm farms for organic waste
