Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 10, 2025, as the Fourth Annual Childers Heritage Day, and part of the National Trust Australian Heritage Festival, gears up to be the biggest and best yet! With an exciting blend of new activities and cherished traditions, this year’s event promises something for everyone as the town comes alive with activities and events, not only at the Childers Heritage Complex but at many other historical locations throughout the historical town.

Among the highlights is a fascinating demonstration and display by The Great War Living History (Maryborough) at the Childers Historical Complex. Known for their dedication to preserving the history and traditions of the Australian Imperial Forces (AIF) during the Great War, the group plans to present a full costume reenactment, potentially featuring horses, immersing visitors in a piece of living history.

Returning this year, with twice the charm, are the beloved Clydesdales, Saxon and Bluebell. Guests will have the chance to snap a free photo with these gentle giants. Families, history buffs, and fun-seekers alike will enjoy a variety of activities, including live music, cross-cut sawing, rope making, damper making (and tasting!), and classic games like egg-and-spoon races.

One of the many historical buildings that will be open on the day is the iconic West Street Hall. Childers Chamber of Commerce will host a display of photos and honour boards from the Isis and District Ladies Bowling Club—Queensland’s only all-female bowling club in 1955. Guests can also enjoy an old-time dancing demonstration, followed by a fun lesson where they’ll learn one of the era’s most popular dances.

The Wide Bay Historic Machinery Club will showcase a display of small engines, while volunteers will provide guided tours of the Childers Historical Complex’s buildings for a gold coin donation.

Visitors can also explore the site at their own pace and enjoy coffee and tea on offer.

Organised by the passionate volunteers of the Isis District Historical Society Inc., Childers Heritage Day celebrates the region’s rich history while fostering community connection and well-being. President Scott Stedman remarked, “We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved with Childers Heritage Day and are excited to introduce new events, sponsors, and participants this year that align with our purpose of preserving the past for the future. It’s going to be a great day!”

With the Complex offering extended opening hours until 3:00 pm, this year’s event will feature an expanded program of events. It will also include a location map to guide visitors through the day’s activities and allow them to plan the day. Over 20 local not-for-profit organisations and several businesses have already confirmed their participation, making it a true community effort as activities and events will be held, not only at the Complex but also at venues throughout the town.

Join us in making this year’s Childers Heritage Day the best yet as we celebrate our history, build community connections, and enjoy a fun-filled day for all!
