Roads & Drainage

Roads and Streets

Council maintains some 3000 kilometres of urban and rural roads. Major operations undertaken in maintaining these roads include bitumen patching, pavement repair, grading and slashing. Council is also responsible for roadside facilities including street lighting, signs and line marking, footpaths, bridges, bus stops and shelters, kerbing and stormwater drains.

Residents and motorists can assist Council in maintaining this vast network by advising Council of any road hazard they notice.

Work on, or use of, any part of the road reserve cannot be undertaken without the prior approval of Council. Application is to be made to carry out works on, over or under land controlled by Council. This is to ensure that the required works can be carried out safely and not cause damage to Council's infrastructure. Permission is required for grazing of animals, discharging of stormwater and depositing or display of goods, mobile vending and stalls, footpath dining and busking. Permits are required for grids or gates or underground pipelines within road reserves. Application must be made to Council prior to undertaking any of these activities. Some applications require a fee to be lodged.

Construction work is undertaken on a priority basis, with Council developing a five year forward programme of works. Construction projects will be prioritised by a ranking system based on criteria such as traffic volumes, network linkages, safety environment, asset condition, school bus route, freight route for primary production, tourist route, amenity, image and expectations.

Turtle Trail - currently under construction

In the first year of Council's operations this section has:-

  • Funded resources in Operations to ensure we maintain safe roads and pathway networks in the Bundaberg Region.
  • Stated its commitment to completing carry over projects from the former Councils such as completion of the Turtle Trail connecting Bargara and Burnett Heads at a cost of over $600,000 and various road construction projects totalling $12.6 million. $13 million of new capital works in the Roads and Drainage area will be undertaken this financial year. There will be a significant increase in the amount of asphalt and bitumen reseals as Council realises the importance of maintaining existing assets. These projects will be carried out across the Bundaberg Region.
  • Stage 2A of the Childers Streetscape Project will be included in the financial year at a cost of $540,000.
  • An allocation of $275,000 has been provided to replace the closed timber bridge over the Kolan River on Smiths Crossing Road.
  • A project to bitumen the full length of Raines Road will be commenced.
  • Jealous Road will be reconstructed between Campbell Street and Alexandra Street for an estimated cost of $500,000.
  • Road reconstruction including stormwater drainage, kerb and channelling and footpaths are planned for Targo Street between Normanby Square and Burnett Street.
  • Rehabilitation and widening of 2 kilometres of the Tableland Arterial Road near Gin Gin will be undertaken at an estimated cost of $362,000.
  • There is $2 million worth of Stormwater Drainage upgrades proposed and $700,000 Pathway Works will be added to the existing network.

Driveways/Property Accesses

Construction and maintenance of driveways, property accesses, or pipe crossings are the responsibility of property owners. Council has standards for construction and it is particularly important that an access does not block a stormwater drainage flowpath or create a hazard for traffic or pedestrians. Any construction on a road reserve (including streets) requires Council permission. Permission can be sought by writing to Council advising of the details of the proposed construction.

Footpaths and Pathways

Council encourages property owners to mow the grass on the footpath in front of their property. Any plantings or construction on the footpath requires the permission of Council. Permission can be sought by writing to Council advising of the details. Any damage or hazard that is noticed on a footpath should be brought to Council's attention.

Addressing

It is a requirement of Council's Local Law for Roads that all properties on which a residence is located display their road or street number. Council maintains the responsibility for providing clear and unambiguous numbering according to an Australian Standard. It is important that your number is clearly displayed for emergency services, utility providers, local business and the community to use. All residential properties in the Region are identified by a Council allocated road/street number. In rural areas, there is a standard post that is purchased by residents and supplied and installed by Council.

Street Lights

Street lights ensure the safety and security of road users and residents. Council pays Ergon Energy to have street lights operating. In coastal areas we also have to be mindful of our turtle nesting significance. Therefore, most of our coastal lighting is the yellow sodium lights. Please advise Council or Ergon of any lights that are not operating. Direct any requests for new street lights to Council.

Please contact us by email should you have any requests or phone 1300 883 699.
