Combined Dexter and Pest Management field day

A combined Dexter Cattle and Pest Management Field Day will be held in Childers on Sunday with experts on several topics on hand to pass on valuable information.

The field day has been organised by Bundaberg Regional Council and local Dexter cattle breeder Ken Thompson.

A variety of topics and demonstrations will be held including how to control pest weeds like Lantana, Giant Rats Tail and Groundsel while practical methods to trap pest animals will be explained.

Vital steps in effective vehicle clean down to prevent spreading weed seeds will also be demonstrated.

Using electric fencing to control wild animals and other methods to control wild dogs, feral pigs and rabbits will be explained by several presenters including Jamie Dennison from Animal Control Technology.

Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation representatives John Reeves and Bernie Shore will speak about the importance of pastures in pest management and pest plant control while Nick Koch from Dow Chemical will pass on facts about woody weed control.

Ear tattooing and potential diseases which could affect Dexter cattle will be discussed by co-hosts Ken and Julie Thompson.

The field day will be held at the Thompson property at 36 Everetts Road, Childers on Sunday 26th February beginning at 9.30 am. A free barbecue lunch will be available before the day ends at 1 pm.
