23 Feb 2012

An application to establish a new building to deliver indigenous and mainstream health care and community services has received unanimous approval from Bundaberg Regional Council.

The application from Indigenous Wellbeing Centre and Aboriginal Corporation includes a two storey contemporary commercial building on the northern corner of Sims Road and Barolin Street in Bundaberg, featuring a gross floor area of 2787 square metres and 68 car parks.

Council’s Planning and Development spokesperson Cr. Ross Sommerfeld said the proposed centre plans to encompass health care, cultural, training and education purposes.

“It is the intention of the Indigenous Wellbeing Corporation to introduce a range of Indigenous-specific health services which may include a visiting psychologist, homeopath, naturopath, optometrist and dietician” Cr. Sommerfeld said.

“The plan also includes a coffee shop with two kitchens, one of which is specifically designed as a training kitchen” he said.

“Currently the Indigenous Wellbeing Centre has offices in Maryborough Street, with 31 staff, servicing 2,600 clients across the Wide Bay region” added Cr Sommerfeld.
