Bundaberg Regional Council is set to redefine the delivery of its community development services programme with an increased emphasis on providing for the whole of the region.
As part of this new direction, Council has resolved not to renew a contract with Bundaberg Community Development Inc.
Mayor Cr. Lorraine Pyefinch said the decision would end an arrangement which involved Council delivering services on behalf of BCD in accordance with a Department of Communities Services Agreement.
Cr. Pyefinch said the new move would allow Council’s Community Development staff more time to focus on Council priorities including implementing the Community Plan which includes building a vibrant, inclusive and caring community that is connected, full of life, empowered and creative.
“Council is also very keen to continue to implement the Bundaberg Region Social Development Plan in an autonomous manner and its ethos of developing a strong, self-reliant community” Cr. Pyefinch said.
Council’s Community and Arts spokesperson Cr. Judy Peters said the decision also means Council will be able to access more funding opportunities to supplement resources in delivering community and social programmes and projects throughout the whole region.
“Other advantages will include allowing Council to work closer and more collaboratively with State and Federal Government agencies on projects which achieve Council desired outcomes and the ability to work more specifically with senior residents” Cr. Peters added.
Cr. Peters said Council’s vision is inclusive of all residents, while in the past, the BCD contract is specifically aligned to the former Bundaberg City Council and Burnett shire areas.
