Hints & Tips

  • Read the search tips and hints provided by each search engine.

  • Type in keywords. For example, if you are looking for information on gardening pests, type in 'gardening pests', not just 'gardening'. Search engines will ignore small, common words such as 'the', 'and', 'why', etc.

  • Generally, you should type your keywords in lower case and avoid using punctuation such as commas, question marks, dashes, etc. However, you should read the search tips provided by the search engine to find out how to best enter your query to get the most optimum results.

  • Use the most unique keywords relevant to your search. This reduces the number of results that you get back from the search engine, and it also should increase the relevancy of the results that you get back.

  • Not all sites are 'registered' with all search engines. If you do not find what you are looking for using one search engine, try looking for it in another search engine.

  • Multi-search engines search several different search engines at once. However, this does not neccessarily make them better or more effective.

  • Many search engine web sites also contain separate subject directories.
