Everyone has experienced at some stage the difficulties involved in applying for a job. In the current climate of job shortages and increased competition, applying for a position is often a stressful process.
It is worthwhile remembering that the Library can be a valuable source of information on job hunting and applying.
We have many books to help you with your applications and resumes including "The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Perfect Resume" and "Resumes for Dummies". To help you find where these resources are located within the Library, see our Careers, Interviews, Resumes, Selection Criteria Book List on the Web or in hardcopy at the Library. For those who are not yet at the application and resume stage, but who are trying to find the right career, you can investigate the Australian Job Guide/Job Guide for Queensland. This guide lists different jobs and describes the duties involved and the qualifications required. It is available either in the Library's Reference Section at R331.702 JOB or Job Guide. Recently, hunting and applying for jobs on the World Wide Web has been gaining in popularity. While this method does not completely replace the more traditional methods such as looking in the newspaper and hand-delivering or posting applications, it can complement them and provide new avenues for you to search and apply for positions. For a list of helpful web sites, have a look at the Library's Careers and Employment Web Guide located on our web site. While you're searching for your perfect job or typing up your resume, you should make the extra effort to research the many hints and tips for resumes and applications available on the Web. This will help you to ensure your application is professionally presented. You are able to read hints, tips and advice on resumes and applications at Seek.com.au. Some of the 'resume faux pas' and the don'ts of resumes and job applications make for very interesting reading. To make sure parts of your resumes and applications do not make it to this or similar sites, ensure you follow the good advice available. An overwhelming theme of resume faux pas and the don'ts of resumes and applications lies with simple errors such as spelling and grammar. Double-check your work using a dictionary and thesaurus. The Macquarie Dictionary is available as is a thesaurus. You invest a great deal of time in preparing your resume and job application. You don't want to waste the time that you have put in by producing a sub-standard application. To ensure you have the best possible chance of being offered the position, it pays to research not only the position and the company involved, but also the dos and don'ts of resumes and applications. |
