Finding People on the Web

A frequently asked question by Internet users is "How do I find someone on the 'Net?" In today's article I am going to explore two different avenues - finding email addresses, and finding old friends. Unfortunately, even though the Web offers you more searching power than ever before, neither of these two options guarantees certain success in finding the person you are looking for.

When it comes to finding email addresses there are many email directories on the Web. However, none of them are very comprehensive, especially when it comes to Australian email addresses. The best way to find out someone's email address still remains to ask them. This is not likely to change in the near future. However, the beauty of the Web is that you never know what you'll find. So, if you're really stuck or just curious, searching some of these email directories may turn out to be worth your while.

Have a look at the following email directories:
Yahoo People Search
Who Where?
World Email Directory

There are also a few other options when searching for someone's email address. If you are looking for someone's work address, then try the web site of that business. They may have an internal staff directory. If you think they may have an address with a free provider such as Yahoo or Hotmail, try that particular service's people finder or email address directory. Be aware though, that people can elect not to put their email address and details in these directories.

Another very interesting way is to type the person's name into the Google (www.google.com.au) search engine and see if anything comes up. It's best to type in their first and last name in quotation marks so that Google performs a phrase search. It is also best to ensure that if you are looking for someone in Australia, that you have set Google to search only pages from Australia. They may have a personal web site, be mentioned on their employer's page, or mentioned on some other web page for some reason.

The Web can also come in handy for finding old school friends. Many sites have sprung up on the Web to help you in this endeavour. Try the following:
Australians Reunited
Aussie Schoolmates
School Friends
Friends Re-united Australia

Not all of these types of sites will offer their service for free, and whether free or not, all of them will probably require registration (your details and an email address) before you can view information about others who have registered.

You should always read the Terms of Service and the Privacy Policy prior to using any of these services and submitting any personal information or credit card details. It would also be a good idea to use an email address created specifically for this purpose from a free email provider such as Yahoo! Mail or Hotmail.

If you are really keen on finding someone's email address or locating old school friends, then try these web sites. You never know who you will find.
