Bundaberg City Council on the Web

Readers will remember that in my last column I highlighted the presence of web sites relevant to Bundaberg. One of the web sites I drew attention to as a great place to start in finding out information about our city, was that of the Bundaberg City Council. This week, I would particularly like to draw your attention to a new feature of the Council site that, I am sure, will bring excitement to many residents, especially the numerous genealogists among us.

The new addition to the site is the online presence of the Bundaberg Cemetery. Arguably, the most exciting aspect of this site, is the ability to search the burial register. Simply type in a surname to see a list of burials under that name. Clicking on a surname will give you brief details about that person including their year of birth and year of death, as well as information about where in the Cemetery that person is buried.

From this screen, if you click on the location of the grave, you will see the map with the relevant burial section highlighted. This is a significant help to those wishing to locate a friend or relative in the large Cemetery. We have a great number of people coming into the Library researching their family history, and a site such as this offers another avenue in the often-times frustrating search for relatives.

The site also details the history of the Cemetery and provides photos of some sections of the Cemetery. It is quite an interesting read. You will also find a helpful list of contact details for local funeral directors, and contact details for other burial locations in the Bundaberg Area.

After you have researched this part of the Council's web site, don't forget that there are other great features to view. This includes the interactive map of Bundaberg. The interactive map can act as an online street directory to help you locate a particular street, and you can refine the map to show particular features such as schools, parks, 50km/hr roads, and so on. Zoom in or out and adjust the view to see a property view, street view, suburb view, or city view.

Also read about education, health, transport, and sport and recreation in the Bundaberg area, as well as links to such community facilities as the Moncrieff Theatre, Arts Centre, and Library. Find out what schools, hospitals, and sporting facilities are in the region, and then check out the movies and live stage shows playing at the Moncrieff Theatre, the exhibitions showing at the Arts Centre, and events and everyday happenings at the Library.

The City Council web site contains a wealth of information and new features are being added all the time. It really is a good jumping off point for information about the City.
