Clue 1: My first stop was a building opened in 1973. It was designed by a Dane. It sits on a Point in Australia's largest city, and it enjoys music and performance. Where was I? Sydney Opera House
Clue 2: My second stop was an island in a subtropical region. Most of its inhabitants speak Spanish. A Dutchman, Jacob Roggeveen, was the first European to land there in 1722. It is famous for some very large stone moai.
Clue 3: My third stop was a water feature situated on a border between two countries. This feature spans a width of approximately 3km, though this width is not uninterrupted. The name of this feature derives from a native name meaning 'great water' and the whole area around me has World Heritage status. The feature shares its name with the river of which it is part and which begins its journey near the city of Curitiba.
Clue 4: My fourth stop was over 5km high in a central American country, just to the south-east of its capital. The country's flag is tri-coloured, like Italy's flag, with a coat of arms in the middle. The mountain erupted in 1994, 1996, and 2000. It has a very Aztec-sounding name.
Clue 5: My fifth stop was another water feature. It spans the borders of three countries and its surface area is larger than Tasmania. It is the largest lake on its continent and is named after a Queen. Its northern shore just crosses the equator.
Clue 6: My sixth stop was necessary in order to catch up with a dear friend, although I hate the cold. It was a city situated on the eastern side of the largest lake in the country. The people there spoke Bokmal and Nynorsk. This city also hosted a Winter Olympic Games in the 1990s.
Clue 7: My seventh stop was at a famous palace. The King of this Gallic country built the palace to make other monarchs jealous, and to make sure he had a bigger place than any of his subordinates or subjects. The palace is a national monument and a famous World War II treaty was signed in its Hall of Mirrors.
Clue 8: My eighth stop was the city that was the eastern terminus for the Silk Road. Just to the north of this city are the famous 'terracotta warriors'. The name of this city means 'Western Peace' and it is located in an extremely populous country.
Clue 9: My ninth stop was a temple. In fact, the second word in its name means 'temple' (the first word in its name means 'capital'). For more than 500 years this temple and complex was the capital of the famous south-east Asian Khmer empire. The temple was abandoned in 1431 and a new city was built nearby. It is located in the northwest of what has previously been known as Kampuchea.
Clue 10: Congratulations on getting this far! I am lookng forward to seeing you both and revealing your surprise! My hideaway is located in the capital city of an island state in the world's largest ocean. My name means 'protected bay' or 'sheltered bay'. The harbour adjacent to this wonderful city I have chosen to live in was bombed during World War II. The scenery surrounding me is very beautiful and includes the old volcanic cones of Diamond Head and Punch Bowl. The weather is lovely and warm and I will be taking you both for picnics in Tamarind Park during your stay with me. |
