AWESOME! |
The Feb / Mar monthly activity was a "My AWESOME Experience..." essay review.
AWESOME members were asked to do a 100-150 word review of their experience with the AWESOME program. They were asked to elaborate on whether they enjoyed the reading, enjoyed the monthly competitions, liked the prizes on offer, read books they wouldn't normally have read, and liked the idea of travelling the world via reading.
Winner: Katherine I. My AWESOME experience is something I'll never forget. I can remember when I was in Primary School, I simply refused to read. It wasn't until Grade Eight when I was faced with a problem. In order to pass my first term course I was required to read a book - Harry Potter and the Philospher's Stone. I can remember positively crying about having to read this book. I just wouldn't read it!! Mum, however had other plans. She made a deal with me; she'd read it if I did. I began, slowly at first, by reading one page a night. However, before too long, I was sucked in and finished the whole book in one weekend. To pass the course I was only required to read the first novel, but I went and got stuck into the second and then the third and so on, until, with the release of the sixth book, I was hooked, even waiting outside the book shop to get my reserved copy. I went on to read all of the Harry Potter books two or three times each. But then, I faced another problem. I couldn't go on reading Harry Potter all my life. I was faced with the question; What next? There were so many shelves with hundreds of books on them. I had no idea where to start. The answer - AWESOME!! 30 books, 6 continents and all the books suitable for reading adorned with a cute little sticker!! AWESOME helped me to keep on reading. Throughout the AWESOME period I read many books, thirty of which I recorded in my passport, the others I enjoyed anyway. I now have several favourite authors, whose books I will continue to read and enjoy. I had great fun participating in AWESOME activities and competitions. I also loved travelling the world through books as it gave me the opportunity to read about and experience other cultures without having to live out of my suitcase!! (which I absolutely hate!!) Over the last six months AWESOME has been a source of great knowledge and understanding as well as helping me discover the joy of reading a book! Thank you AWESOME!!!
Runner-Up: Taraka S. Throughout my AWESOME experience I've enjoyed reading the books from different continents because it challenged me to read different books that I wouldn't normally read and it was also a challenge as I had to read out of a certain selection it just wasn't any book. I liked reading the books by travelling around the world because some books gave me an idea of what some of the places are like around the world. Throughout the AWESOME experience I liked doing some of the competitions because it got me thinking about some questions around the world. It also gave me something to do while I didn't feel like reading. I also liked the prizes because they gave me a goal to get to while reading. I would give the AWESOME programme 9/10 because it gave me better reading skills and it was fun.
