AWESOME!
Around the World Exploring Stories of Mystery and Excitement!

How AWESOME! Runs

In AWESOME participants 'travel' the world via reading. Participants receive a custom-made passport taking them through six different continents - North America, Europe, Asia, South America, Australasia, and Africa.

For each continent participants read a certain number of novels/picture books. The story of each of these novels must be set in the continent for which they are reading. Eg. when completing the continent of Africa, participants may read novels set in South Africa, Egypt, Morocco, or any other country within the African continent.

Participants are split into three levels according to age and/or reading ability. Level 1 = 4-6 years; Level 2 = 7-9 years; Level 3 = 10+ years. The Level 1 program has slightly different requirements due to the fact that students of this age are not yet generally able to read by themselves, and are reading picture books rather than junior fiction novels.

Level 1 participants read or have read to them 10 picture books. They must also draw a picture about two of the books they have read. They are then considered to have completed a continent. Level 2 and 3 participants are required to read five novels for each continent and to record the title, author, and genre of the book, as well as comments about the story. Participants in all three levels record the books they have read in their passports.

When they have finished their reading for each continent participants bring their completed passports to Sue or Peta in the Library. Sue or Peta will ask some questions about the books the participant has read, and if everything is judged satisfactory, the participant will receive their prize.

As can be seen from this outline, the aim of the program is not to read as many books as possible. A maximum of 30 (60 for Level 1) books will be read. It is hoped that by requiring the storylines to be set in a particular continent, participants will read books they may not normally pick up. Ideally, this will open them up to new authors and genres and demonstrate the wide variety of 'worlds' you can visit through reading.
