Public Informed of Progress - Press Release 02.11.09
Over 90 people attended a public information night
hosted by Bundaberg Regional Council to discuss the much anticipated Gin Gin
Streetscape revitalisation. Residents were provided details on the projects
history and the concept that was developed by the former Kolan Shire Council.
Bundaberg Regional Council Mayor, Cr Lorraine
Pyefinch, outlined how the revitalisation of the Gin Gin Streetscape would meet
the infrastructure needs of the Gin Gin CBD for the next 30 years. "When
Bundaberg Regional Council was formed in March last year, the long awaited Gin
Gin Streetscape revitalisation was identified as a priority investment project
by Bundaberg Regional Council," she said.
"We see the main street upgrade as necessary to
enhance the safety of motorists and pedestrians, whilst maintaining access and
attractiveness to residents and tourists.
In addition to the safety and recreational aspects, there are economic
benefits for businesses and residents through an enhanced streetscape."
Following extensive public consultation the former
Kolan Shire Council signed off on the final layout in 2005 and stage one of the
construction works commenced. The already completed works include
re-surfacing of the highway road, extensive drainage works across the main
carriageway coupled with underground power and street lighting. Bundaberg
Regional Council is now preparing to undertake stage 2 of the project which is
the civil and landscape works between Walker and Milden Streets at an estimated
cost of $3.3 million. This is with the
assistance of the State Government's contribution of $750,000 under the Rural
Living Infrastructure Program.
Division Three Councillor, Cr Wayne Honor, outlined
that the civil design has been completed based on the street layout endorsed by
the community, with some minor adjustments to meet the requirements of
Department of Main Roads. "In determining the street layout there were various
restrictions, both site and regulatory, that influenced the outcome. Our
designers have worked within these constraints to deliver the best balanced
outcome that all parties were seeking," he said.
"A draft landscape design has been completed but it
requires further work to ensure the centre median strip retains the quaint and welcoming
"look and feel" of Gin Gin that is so attractive to residents and visitors . The new footprint will formalise the area
around the ANZAC Memorial, provide additional seating and shaded areas;
additional extensive tree plantings; and new garden beds."
"Council will undertake this landscape design review
in conjunction with a landscape architect and with the input of Council's local
gardeners, the Gin Gin Chamber of Commerce and the Gin Gin Community," Cr
Honor said.
Works on the street frontages are expected to commence
in late January 2010 and will be undertaken by Council's workforce. Where
possible local businesses will be asked to tender for material supplies and an
attempt will be made to source any casual labour required from within the local
community.
Interested
Members of the Gin Gin community are invited to join a Focus Group to provide
feedback about the centre median landscaping plan and should write to the
Strategic Projects Coordinator, Bundaberg Regional Council, PO Box 3130,
BUNDABERG, QLD 4670 or email: matt.dagan@bundaberg.qld.gov.au.
Residents are asked to outline their interest in the main street upgrade and any
experience in landscaping or local community panels. For more details phone Matt

Public Meeting - Press Release 01.10.09
Gin Gin
residents and business people can find out about the much-anticipated Gin Gin
Streetscape project at a Community Information night hosted by Bundaberg
Regional Council, to be held at the Gin Gin RSL Hall in Milden Street on
Tuesday 13 October, commencing at 6pm.
Councillors
and Council Officers will be attending to provide information about the
Streetscape works, including plans, visual graphics, construction schedules and
future funding opportunities. Light
refreshments will be provided.
The
revitalisation works are targeted towards civil and beautification upgrades for
the Central Business District of Gin Gin on Mulgrave Street.
Councillor
Wayne Honor, who was involved in the concept development with the previous
Kolan Shire Council and now with Bundaberg Regional Council, said planning started 6
years ago. "The community, residents and other Government Departments were
heavily involved in consultation and concept development going back to 2003,"
said Cr Honor. "Since then Council has invested in drainage, underground power
and the detailed designs. The upgrade
works, which address traffic speed, parking, pedestrian safety, security,
streetscape and beautification, will deliver beneficial outcomes for Gin Gin
and the Bundaberg region," added Cr Honor.
Mayor Lorraine Pyefinch believes
the revitalisation of the Gin Gin CBD will greatly enhance the Northern gateway
to the Bundaberg Region. "These
important works in Gin Gin will not only benefit the residents but also provide
additional appeal for visitors to travel to the region and increase the number
of people who stop while travelling through on the Bruce Highway," said Cr
Pyefinch. "Council believes the revitalisation works will increase the confidence
of local businesses and residents, triggering further investment from the
community. We see the Gin Gin Streetscape as a major economic driver not only
for Gin Gin, but for the whole region," Cr Pyefinch added.
Construction is expected to commence in February next year
and be completed over a 12 month period.
Council has committed $1.8 million in the 2009/10 financial year to
instigate stage one and is investigating further funding for future years.
Council is grateful for the support from
the State Government's Rural Living Infrastructure Fund which is providing
$750,000 towards stage one construction expenses.
